ERROR 6123 / 0

How to Fix QuickBooks Error 6123 / 0 (Error Connecting to Company File)

What it means: QuickBooks cannot connect to the company file, usually after restoring a backup, moving the file, or a Windows update. This error is often simpler than it looks — the file path or hosting setup just needs to be refreshed.

Before you start: Close QuickBooks on all computers. Make a backup of your company file if you can open it. Write down any error codes you see — they help narrow down the cause.

Fix 1: Restart QuickBooks and the Computer

1
Close QuickBooks on all computers.
2
Restart the host computer (the one with the company file).
3
Restart the workstation showing error 6123.
4
Open QuickBooks on the host first, then try the workstation.

Fix 2: Re-scan the Company File Folder

1
On the host computer, open QuickBooks Database Server Manager.
2
Go to the Scan Folders tab.
3
Remove the old folder path and add the current folder where the file lives.
4
Click Scan.
5
The .ND file will be recreated with the correct network settings.

Fix 3: Check if the File Was Restored from a Backup

1
If you restored from a backup, the file may have lost its network configuration.
2
Copy the restored file to the original shared folder location.
3
Make sure the folder is shared with the same network permissions as before.
4
Run Database Server Manager scan again after moving the file.

Fix 4: Rename the .ND and .TLG Files

1
Browse to the folder with your company file.
2
Find files with the same name as your company file but ending in .ND and .TLG.
3
Right-click each and rename them to .ND.old and .TLG.old.
4
Open QuickBooks again. It will recreate these files automatically.
5
If the error is gone, delete the .old files. If not, rename them back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will renaming .ND and .TLG files hurt my data?

No. The .ND file is just network configuration. The .TLG file is a transaction log used for backup verification. QuickBooks recreates both automatically. Your actual data is in the .QBW file.

Why does this happen after a Windows update?

Windows updates sometimes change network profiles, disable file sharing, or reset firewall rules. The computer may also get a new IP address, breaking the path stored in the .ND file.

What if the error only happens on one computer?

That workstation probably has a stale network path or cached credentials. Remove the mapped drive and reconnect, or browse to the file fresh through the network instead of using a recent file shortcut.

Still Seeing Error 6123?

Some errors have deeper causes — Windows updates, network changes, or file damage that needs manual repair. We diagnose the root cause and fix it remotely.
