ERROR H202

How to Fix QuickBooks Error H202 (Multi-User Mode Not Working)

What it means: QuickBooks is trying to switch to multi-user mode but cannot communicate with the company file on the host computer. This is almost always an environment issue — not a QuickBooks bug.

Before you start: Make sure you are on the host computer (the one that stores the company file) for Steps 1–3. The other computers are "workstations."

Fix 1: Check Hosting on the Host Computer

This is the #1 cause of H202. Only the host computer should have hosting turned on.

1
Open QuickBooks on the host computer (the one with the company file).
2
Do not open the company file. Stay at the "No Company Open" screen.
3
Go to File → Utilities.
4
Look at the menu:
  • If you see "Stop Hosting Multi-User Access" → Hosting is ON. Good. Skip to Fix 2.
  • If you see "Host Multi-User Access" → Hosting is OFF. Click it to turn hosting ON.
Important: On every workstation (not the host), go to File → Utilities and make sure you see "Host Multi-User Access" (meaning hosting is OFF). If any workstation has hosting on, turn it off. Multiple hosts = chaos.

Fix 2: Restart the QuickBooks Database Server Manager

This service is what allows multiple users to connect. It sometimes stops after Windows updates or restarts.

1
On the host computer, press Windows key + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
2
Scroll down and look for a service named something like:
  • QuickBooksDB29 (QuickBooks 2019)
  • QuickBooksDB30 (QuickBooks 2020)
  • QuickBooksDB31 (QuickBooks 2021)
  • QuickBooksDB32 (QuickBooks 2022)
  • QuickBooksDB33 (QuickBooks 2023)
3
If the service is not running, right-click it → Start.
4
Right-click the service → Properties. Make sure Startup type is set to Automatic.
5
Also check QBCFMonitorService — make sure it is running and set to Automatic.

Fix 3: Check the Company File Path

Workstations must use the exact same path to reach the file. UNC paths (like \\ServerName\ShareName\) are more reliable than mapped drives.

1
On the host, find your company file. Note the folder it is in.
2
Right-click the folder → Properties → Sharing tab.
3
Click Advanced Sharing → check "Share this folder".
4
Note the Share name. It will look like \\HostComputerName\ShareName.
5
On each workstation, open QuickBooks and use File → Open or Restore Company. Browse to the UNC path, not a mapped drive letter.

Fix 4: Add Windows Firewall Exceptions

Windows Firewall often blocks QuickBooks after updates.

1
On the host, go to Control Panel → Windows Defender Firewall → Allow an app.
2
Click Change Settings, then Allow another app.
3
Browse and add these executables from your QuickBooks folder (usually C:\Program Files\Intuit\QuickBooks [Year]):
  • QBW32.exe
  • QBDBMgrN.exe
  • QBDBMgr.exe
4
Make sure both Private and Public boxes are checked.

Fix 5: Ping the Host from the Workstation

This tests if the workstation can even see the host computer on the network.

1
On a workstation, press Windows key + R, type cmd, and press Enter.
2
Type: ping [HostComputerName] (replace with the actual computer name of the host).
3
If you get "Request timed out," the computers cannot talk. Check that:
  • Both computers are on the same network
  • The host computer is not asleep or hibernating
  • Network cables are plugged in (avoid Wi-Fi on the host if possible)
