How to Fix QuickBooks Running Very Slowly

What it means: QuickBooks takes too long to open, save transactions, switch screens, or run reports. This is usually the environment — not the file size or the software itself.

Before you start: Make a backup of your company file. Some of these steps involve changing Windows settings. Better safe than sorry.

Fix 1: Check the Host Computer Resources

If the company file is hosted on an underpowered computer, everyone suffers.

1
On the host computer, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
2
Click the Performance tab. Check CPU, Memory, and Disk usage.
3
If Memory is above 85% or Disk is at 100%, the host is underpowered. QuickBooks needs at least 8 GB RAM (16 GB recommended) on the host.
Quick win: Close unnecessary programs on the host computer. Browsers with many tabs, Outlook, and Excel can consume huge amounts of RAM.

Fix 2: Verify You Are Using a Wired Connection

Wi-Fi is the silent killer of QuickBooks performance. It introduces latency and packet loss that makes every screen refresh feel sluggish.

1
Check that the host computer is connected via Ethernet cable, not Wi-Fi.
2
If workstations are on Wi-Fi, try connecting one via Ethernet temporarily to see if performance improves.
3
If Wi-Fi is unavoidable, make sure the host and workstations are on the same Wi-Fi band (5 GHz preferred over 2.4 GHz).

Fix 3: Switch from Mapped Drives to UNC Paths

Mapped drives are slower and less reliable than UNC paths (like \\Server\Share). They also cache credentials incorrectly.

1
On each workstation, note the current mapped drive letter (like Z:) used for QuickBooks.
2
In QuickBooks, go to File → Open or Restore Company.
3
Instead of the mapped drive, browse to the UNC path: \\HostComputerName\ShareName\CompanyFile.qbw
4
Open the file from the UNC path. If it is faster, update your shortcuts to use the UNC path permanently.

Fix 4: Check for Antivirus Scanning the Company File

Real-time antivirus scanning of .QBW files causes massive slowdowns. Every save triggers a scan.

1
Open your antivirus software (Windows Security, Norton, McAfee, etc.).
2
Find the Exclusions or Exceptions section.
3
Add these exclusions:
  • The folder containing your company file
  • *.QBW (company files)
  • *.QBB (backup files)
  • *.QBM (portable files)
  • *.ND (network data files)
  • *.TLG (transaction log files)
Important: Only exclude QuickBooks files and folders. Do not turn off antivirus completely.

Fix 5: Verify and Rebuild the Company File

A damaged company file can cause slowness even if it still opens.

1
In QuickBooks, go to File → Utilities → Verify Data.
2
If Verify finds problems, go to File → Utilities → Rebuild Data.
3
Let Rebuild complete. This can take 10–30 minutes depending on file size. Do not interrupt it.
4
After Rebuild, run Verify Data again to confirm no errors remain.

Fix 6: Reduce the Transaction Log (.TLG) File Size

A huge .TLG file slows down QuickBooks. It grows indefinitely until you verify and rebuild or create a portable company file.

1
Navigate to your company file folder.
2
Look for a file with the same name as your company file but ending in .TLG.
3
If the .TLG file is larger than 500 MB, it is time to reset it. The easiest way: create a Portable Company File (File → Create Copy → Portable company file) and restore it. This resets the TLG.

Fix 7: Update QuickBooks and Windows

Outdated software causes compatibility issues that manifest as slowness.

1
In QuickBooks, go to Help → Update QuickBooks DesktopUpdate Now.
2
On the host computer, go to Settings → Windows Update and install any pending updates.
3
Restart the host computer after updates.
