How to Fix QuickBooks Keeps Crashing or Freezing

What it means: QuickBooks closes unexpectedly, shows a white screen, or displays "Not Responding." This can be caused by software conflicts, data damage, or environmental issues.

Before you start: Make a backup of your company file right now. Crashes can corrupt data. Go to File → Back Up Company → Create Local Backup.

Fix 1: Update QuickBooks to the Latest Release

Intuit regularly releases patches that fix crash-causing bugs.

1
Open QuickBooks and go to Help → Update QuickBooks Desktop.
2
Click Update Now → check all items → click Get Updates.
3
Restart QuickBooks when prompted. If it crashes during update, try the next fix first, then return to update.

Fix 2: Run QuickBooks in Safe Mode (No Extensions)

Third-party integrations and extensions often cause crashes.

1
Hold down the Ctrl key and double-click the QuickBooks icon. Keep holding Ctrl until QuickBooks opens.
2
If QuickBooks opens without crashing, the problem is likely a third-party integration or damaged window settings.
3
If it still crashes in safe mode, the issue is deeper — likely data damage or a Windows conflict.

Fix 3: Rename the QBWUSER.INI File

This file stores window and display settings. When it is damaged, QuickBooks crashes on startup.

1
Close QuickBooks completely.
2
Press Windows key + R, type %appdata%\Intuit\QuickBooks [Year], and press Enter.
3
Find the file named QBWUSER.INI. Right-click it → Rename → change it to QBWUSER.OLD.
4
Restart QuickBooks. It will create a fresh QBWUSER.INI file. You may need to re-arrange your windows, but this fixes many crashes.

Fix 4: Check for Antivirus Conflicts

Antivirus programs sometimes quarantine or block QuickBooks processes mid-operation, causing crashes.

1
Open your antivirus quarantine or threat history.
2
Look for any QuickBooks-related files that were quarantined (QBW32.exe, QBDBMgrN.exe, etc.).
3
Restore any quarantined QuickBooks files and add them to your antivirus exclusions list.
4
Also exclude your company file folder and these extensions: .QBW, .QBB, .QBM, .ND, .TLG

Fix 5: Verify and Rebuild the Company File

Data damage is a common cause of crashes, especially when performing specific actions like opening certain reports or customer records.

1
Go to File → Utilities → Verify Data. Let it run completely.
2
If Verify finds errors, go to File → Utilities → Rebuild Data.
3
If Rebuild fails or crashes, your file may be severely damaged. Try opening a backup from before the crashes started.

Fix 6: Check Windows Event Viewer for Clues

Windows logs the exact reason for a crash. This can point you to the culprit.

1
Press Windows key + R, type eventvwr, and press Enter.
2
Go to Windows Logs → Application.
3
Look for red Error entries around the time QuickBooks crashed. Note the source (QuickBooks, .NET Runtime, etc.).
4
If you see .NET Runtime errors, reinstall .NET Framework. If you see QBW32.exe errors, the issue is likely within QuickBooks itself.

Fix 7: Create a New Windows User Profile

Sometimes the Windows user profile itself is corrupted, causing QuickBooks to crash for only one user.

1
Create a new Windows user account (Settings → Accounts → Family & other users → Add account).
2
Log in as the new user and try opening QuickBooks.
3
If QuickBooks works fine under the new profile, your original Windows profile is damaged. Migrate to the new profile or repair the old one.
